How Do Scorpions Get in Your House?

Scorpions get into a house through gaps under doors, worn garage seals, damaged screens and openings around pipes or cables. Bark scorpions can climb, so possible entry routes are not all at ground level. Start by checking closed doors and accessible wall openings, then compare what you find with where scorpions have been seen.

Gaps under doors and garage doors

Start with the doors you use every day. Close each exterior door and look along the bottom edge and lower corners. Worn sweeps, damaged weatherstripping and a poor fit can leave an opening even when the latch is secure.

Check the door from both sides where you can do so safely. Daylight is a useful sign of a gap, but the absence of daylight does not prove every edge is sealed. Look for loose material, missing sections and places where the seal no longer meets the threshold.

Garage doors need a separate check. Look along the bottom and sides while the door is fully closed. Uneven concrete and worn seals can leave openings. Keep hands away from tracks and moving parts. Have a door professional address alignment or mechanical problems.

A visible gap is worth repairing. It does not prove that a particular scorpion used it. Record the repair date and keep noting sightings so you can compare the activity before and after the work.

Wall openings and window screens

Check accessible window screens for holes, loose corners and a poor fit in the frame. A screen needs to cover the opening it is meant to protect. Repairing a hole will not help if the frame still leaves a gap beside it.

Exterior walls also have openings that serve a purpose. Weep openings let moisture escape from parts of the wall. Vents provide airflow. Do not fill every opening with caulk or foam because it looks large enough for a pest.

Suitable screening or another repair may reduce access while preserving the opening's function. The right detail depends on the building. If you cannot identify an opening, photograph it and ask a building professional before changing it.

Bark scorpions can climb rough walls. A window or accessible wall opening above ground level can therefore be relevant to the inspection. Inspect from a safe position. Do not climb onto the roof to look for a route.

Gaps around pipes and cables

Look where plumbing, cables and other utilities pass through an accessible wall. The space around a pipe can be an opening into a cabinet or room. That is different from a scorpion traveling inside the pipe.

Under a sink, use a light and look before reaching. Note visible gaps and any leak or moisture damage. Have leaks repaired before covering the area. Choose repair materials that suit the opening and surface, or ask the appropriate trade to handle it.

Do not block equipment vents, intakes, outlets or drains. Do not open electrical equipment to search for pests. If a penetration sits beside a service panel or unfamiliar equipment, take a photograph from a safe distance and ask for guidance.

For each suspected opening, write down the room and what you saw. A short list helps separate work a homeowner can arrange from work that needs a plumber, electrician or other building professional.

Shelter and insects near the house

Scorpions use protected spaces around block walls, stored wood, rocks and debris. They also feed on insects and other small animals. Shelter close to the building can put activity near a door or wall opening.

Clear unnecessary stored material beside the house and keep accessible inspection areas visible. Use gloves and tools when moving items. Look before reaching underneath anything that has been sitting outside.

Check plants that touch the building and persistent moisture from leaks or irrigation. You do not need to strip the yard bare. Focus on conditions that make an entrance difficult to inspect or keep the wall area damp and sheltered.

Porch lights can attract insects that scorpions feed on. Keep lighting needed for safety. If insects gather around an entry, review unnecessary lighting duration and inspect the nearby door and screen. Light alone does not explain every scorpion sighting.

What to check after an indoor sighting

Note the date, room and exact location. “On the bathroom wall” is more useful than “inside.” Include whether it was near a door, on the floor, in a tub or overhead. Take a photo only when you can keep a safe distance.

Check the accessible doors, screens and utility gaps serving that room. Then look at adjoining rooms and the nearest exterior wall. A scorpion can move after entering, so do not assume the closest opening was the route.

Keep a separate record of repairs and treatments. Include what was changed and when. That makes it easier to discuss new sightings without guessing whether they happened before or after the work.

If you find one on a ceiling, the scorpion climbing guide explains why that can happen. Our scorpion proofing guide covers door repairs, wall openings and routine checks.

When to arrange an inspection

Contact us when sightings repeat, when scorpions appear in bedrooms, or when you cannot work out which repairs are appropriate. You do not need a species name or a confirmed entry route to request an inspection.

We start with your sightings and the accessible conditions at the property. Treatment, entry repairs and outdoor cleanup address different parts of the problem. We explain the proposed service and identify work that needs another trade.

Sealing is quoted separately. Ask which openings are included and what the repair will preserve, including drainage and ventilation. The work should have a clear scope before you book.

See scorpion control in Queen Creek or scorpion control in San Tan Valley for local service details. Tell us where you are seeing activity so we can discuss the next step for your home.

FAQs

Can scorpions enter through a closed garage door?

Yes, if worn bottom or side seals leave a gap. Inspect the closed door from a safe position and arrange repairs where needed. A gap is a possible entry point, but finding it does not prove that a particular scorpion came through it.

Should I caulk the weep holes?

No. Weep openings allow moisture to escape from the wall. Suitable screening or another building repair may reduce pest access while preserving drainage. Ask a building professional if you are unsure what an opening does.

Do porch lights attract scorpions?

Lights can attract insects that scorpions feed on. If insects gather near an entry, review unnecessary lighting and check the nearby door or screen. Keep lighting needed for safety. Light is one condition to assess, not proof of an entry route.

Does a ceiling sighting prove they came through the attic?

No. Bark scorpions can climb textured walls and move across ceilings. Record the room and location, then have accessible entry points checked. Do not open fixtures or climb into unsafe spaces to follow the sighting.
